The AP Exam

Students will meet for a pre test breakfast at 6:45 am in the faculty conference room.
Current AP Test (2015 and beyond)
Part 1: 60% of the Overall Grade
Multiple Choice and Short Answer 40% of the overall grade
A. There will be 55 multiple choice questions in 55 mins. There will be graphs and reading passages associated with a group of 2-5 multiple choice questions. The graph and/or readings will not have the answers to the M/C in them. This is not a reading comprehension exam, it is about content. You need to know history. In fact, the M/Cs do not need to be answered using the graph or reading. We will discuss this more in class.
B. Short Answer 20% of the overall grade
There will be 4 short answers. You have 45 mins to complete this section.
Part II 40% of the Overall Grade 95 mins total
DBQ: Students will answer and analyze a given prompt and use all the given documents to support and analyze their response. Both the response and the analysis require extensive information outside what is contained in the accompanying documents.
Long Essay: Formally referred to as the FRQ, students will be given 2 prompts from which they must chose ONE. Students must answer and analyze the given question. Expect to see prompts which require students to analyze and assess larger chunks of historic time.
Students must manage the entire 95 minutes with regard to both essays. There will be a 15 minute planning and reading time and the remaining 80 minutes is for writing the two essays.

Old Test Structure (up to 2014)
The entrie exam takes approx 3 hours. Students must complete the test in the provided time and sit for the duration.
Part 1: Multiple Choice - 50% of the overall grade.
There are 80 m/c questions over 55 minutes. This sections constitutues 50% of the overall test score. Questions range in difficulty with harder level questions usually appearing towards the end. The m/c is not chronological but there is typically a pattern of 5-8 questions that do proceed chronologically and then reset for the next group.
Part 2: Essays 50% of the overall grade
There is approx 2 hours and 5 minutes given for students complete the entire essay section. Students may use
this time however they wish - meaning they can divide it in any manner over the essay portion. They may not use this
time to continue working on the multiple choice section.
DBQ: 25 % of the overall grade
FRQ: There are 2 parts to this section. In the first part, students are given two essay prompts from an earlier period
(prior to 1900). Students MUST choose one of thse essay prompts (12.5% of the overall grade). In
the second section, students will be given a choice of two essays from the later period. Students must choose one of these
prompts, again for 12.5% of the overall grade.
